THE SCRUTINIES The Scrutinies are celebrated on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent. But what are Scrutinies? During this period it is a time of reflection to discover ourselves, what tempts us, what tempted us and why. Every Lenten season is a time for accounting of oneself and a time of reconciliation and penance. Jesus Christ called all sinners to repent, but with repentance comes penance and also the Vigil to sin no more. The beauty of the celebration of the Scrutinies with the entire congregation is that the whole of the Catholic Church during the Lenten season calls to mind both their sins and the desire to renew their Baptismal vows. Satan can have no power over the soul that is disciplined to self reflection. The point of the Scrutinies is to strengthen the Soul of the Catechumenate and the Candidates through uncovering of weaknesses, strengthen through the word of God to be empowered to overcome the temptations of Satan. The laying on of hands to Exorcise the Elect and free them from the power of Satan is an instrumental rite confirming the power of salvation through Jesus Christ. Our desire should be to seek salvation and the path to salvation is to be mindful of temptation - and certainly in this society, temptation is constantly poised to undermine your resolve. It is only through daily prayer and meditation that we can maintain ourselves on the path to Salvation.
